About Me

Val Kells Fish Prints
The short story is... I'm a fish geek.

The long story... I am a professional Marine Science Illustrator with over 25 years of experience. I've worked with scientists, curators, designers, and writers to create aesthetic, accurate, and detailed illustrations for exhibits in public aquariums, museums, and nature centers. My work has also been extensively published in books and periodicals. Most recently I designed, illustrated, and coauthored A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes - from Maine to Texas. This book took over five years to complete and contains 1,079 full-color illustrations.

Each painting was meticulously researched and rendered in life-like watercolor on 300lb. hotpress Arches ® paper. All images are archived and made available for reproduction in select publications. I'm also making some available here as high-quality prints.

When I'm not painting, I hope to be fishing (if even vicariously!) When I'm not fishing, I'm usually painting. And now that I've illustrated all of the Atlantic and Gulf coast fishes, next up: the Pacific. A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes - from Alaska to California is in progress!

Tight lines, Val
